Editing: Main cutting techniques used in thrillers

Here is an example of how different types of 'cut have been used in post production to create meaning and suspense:

I this trailer of Christopher Nolans Memento (2000) many techniques are used to convey the leading protagonists confusion.

For example L cut and J Cut edits are used through out the whole trailer to disorientate the audience. One particular L cut to mention would be at the start when he is talking to a man behind a glass window; we hear the start of their conversation where he is telling him about his condition, this clip is then interrupted by a few short shots and then their conversation and dialogue continues. This has been used to shown how his mind is moving slower than he is, as the action of the plot os moving forward he is remaining in the same place, having the same conversation over and over again.

Editing is also used to display the words flickering on the screen, is used to show the juxtaposition between what the audience knows and what the main

protagonist knows; when watching the trailer we are enticed, we want to see who is the ‘LOVER’, ‘FRIEND’ OR ‘KILLER’ is.

Sound is also used to make the editing more effective meaning as the trailer comes to and end the sound gets faster and louder to show the panic of his memory resetting everyday.
